Service & Resilience Amid An Aggie Tragedy
The Battalion November 18, 1999, 1
On November 18, 1999, the Aggie Bonfire tragically collapsed. The morning following the incident The Battalion published an article. At the time of its publication, 4 students were pronounced dead, with others remaining trapped. The article pictures several students gathering to pray. Perhaps most noticeable are the hard hats that some are wearing, telling of their willingness to serve. Despite being initially turned away from emergency services, Aggies came together to aid and pay respect to their fellow classmates. Eventually emergency service personnel permitted students to remove logs in increments of twenty. Aggie core values in action “unity, service, and resilience” are seen here. Much like a family, the Aggie community honored the fallen and through this expressed unity, cultivating an enduring spirit.
